MY GARAGE DOOR WILL GO UP, BUT WILL NOT COME DOWN.

This symptom is a common problem with the safety sensors on your garage door opener.  The safety sensors are the little black boxes on each end of your garage door near the floor.  The red LED light on one sensor should be on solid and not flashing or flickering.  If the other sensor has a green LED light, it should also be on solid.  You should check to be sure the sensors are still aligned and pointing at each other, not obstructed by anything, the wires are still connected properly and that the lenses are free and clear of debris or spider webs.  If constant pressure on your opener’s wall control button will travel the door down, that is a good indication you have a problem with the sensors.  The replacement part that we offer (37220R Kit) is the best repair approach.

37220R "Safety Sensor Kit"

Note: Safety sensors may not be bypassed or dismantled.  Your opener will not travel down without them.

I NEED A NEW REMOTE, BUT DO NOT KNOW WHICH ONE TO BUY.

In order to determine which replacement remote you need, match up the model number found on the back of your current working remote to one that is found on our site here:

Remote Controls

Be sure to match up the model to one found in the description in our text.

If you do not have a working remote or any remotes, you will need to check the main power head hanging from the ceiling in the garage.   Locate the small antenna wire hanging from or near the main power head.  Follow it up, where you will find either 12 small rocker switches (or bridged wires) or a small black button with a red LED light bulb next to it.  You may need to remove the light bulb cover to find this, but you do not need to remove the main power head cover.  If your antenna wire leads you to a small rectangular box (receiver) mounted near and connected to the main power head with three wires, you need the frequency (freq) number off the end of the box.  A frequency number of 390 will use our model GT912 as a replacement.  Any other frequency (225,230,235,240,250,255,260,290,295,300,305,310,315,320,325) a replacement remote is no longer available.  Our GIRUD Universal Radio Control Kit replaces older, discontinued remotes and receivers.

Compatibility examples:

1. 12 rocker switches (or bridged wires) uses GPT90-1 or MAT90

2.   9 rocker switches (390 Frequency) uses GT912

3.   Small black button with red LED light uses Intellicode Series II – G2T-1, G2T-2, G2T-3, GIT-1, GIT-2, GIT-3, GMI-3BL.

I NEED TO PROGRAM MY REMOTE CONTROL, KEYLESS ENTRY, OR “HOMELINK” VISOR REMOTE.

The factory programming instructions for the Genie remotes and keyless entries are found on our site here:

Coding Instructions

The programming instructions for your Homelink visor remote are found in your vehicles owner’s manual.  You must follow programming instructions exactly for things to work..  If repeated attempts at programming fail, the device must be bad and needs to be replaced.  We do not have any magic secret to make Homelink work and cannot provide any additional assistance than the factory instructions provide- please see your car dealer for assistance.

MY GARAGE DOOR HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN AND OPENS ALL BY ITSELF.

Otherwise known as “phantom openings”, this symptom is often a problem with your remote control.  Especially the older AT90 and AT85 model remotes.  It will also affect your wall mounted button inside the garage. Take your remote apart by removing the screw from the back.  Look for the small, narrow contact strip on the printed circuit board just above the battery inside the remote.  If that contact strip is smashed down flat against the little brass contact underneath it, than that is the cause of your problem.  You will need to replace that remote.  Match up the model number on the back of your remote to one found on our site.  Replacement remotes are found on our site here:

Remote Controls

MY GARAGE DOOR STARTS TO OPEN OR CLOSE AND THEN STOPS, AND I HEAR A LOUD GRINDING NOISE.

The loud grinding noise is probably the carriage wearing.  The carriage is the small, black plastic piece that travels along the screw of your door opener.  On the underside of the carriage is a metal rack that engages to the screw of your opener.  The metal rack is made of a softer metal than the screw and will wear out over time.  That part – 36179R – is an easy enough part to replace and is found on our site here:

Screw Drive Repair Part 36179R

MY GENIE SCREW DRIVE GARAGE DOOR OPENER IS VERY NOISY.

Periodic lubrication of the screw on your opener should be done to keep it running smooth and quiet.  Our “LUB7” Lubricant is the recommended lubricant for all Genie screw drive garage door openers.  Click here to view that item:

LUB 7 Lubricant

Also, check the motor head case and light bulb cover for vibration.

MY OPENER MOTOR RUNS, BUT THE SCREW DOES NOT TURN.

On Genie’s “clutchless” openers, there is a small plastic coupler that connects the screw assembly to the main power head.  To inspect and replace that part, remove the two screws holding the rail to the main power head.  Slide the rail away from the main power head.  The coupler may still be attached to the motor shaft.  Remove the coupler with a pair of needle nose pliers and inspect both sides of the coupler. The 30257T Coupler that we offer is the only one made for all Genie “clutchless” openers and is found on our site here:

Screw Drive Coupler # 30257T

If the screw assembly on your Genie garage door opener protrudes out the back end of the main power head, you do not have a “clutchless” opener, and there is no coupler on that opener.

I WANT TO DISCONNECT, DISABLE, OR BYPASS MY SAFETY SENSORS.

Sorry.  But this cannot be done.  Your safety sensors must be installed and in working order for your opener to work properly.  Replacement parts are found here:

37220R "Safety Sensor Kit"

I HAVE POWER TO MY GARAGE DOOR OPENER, BUT IT DOES NOT RESPOND TO EITHER MY REMOTE CONTROL OR THE WALL MOUNTED BUTTON INSIDE THE GARAGE.

First, be sure you do have power to the garage door opener.  If so, this problem is probably a bad printed circuit board inside the main power head.  Circuit boards are very easy parts to replace.  The entire list of circuit boards available for the Genie openers is found on our site here:

Circuit Boards

I NEED TO FIND A SERVICE MAN IN MY AREA.

Your best source is your local phone book.  Look in the Yellow Pages under “door and gate operating devices”.

MY REMOTE CONTROL ONLY WORKS FROM A FEW FEET AWAY FROM THE GARAGE.

Range problems are increasingly difficult to troubleshoot.  Many things can affect the range of your remote controls, including cell towers, satellite dishes, motor homes, and wireless devices.  Try replacing the batteries in your remotes, make sure the antenna wire on the main power head is hanging down freely, plug the garage door opener into a different circuit.  If you have more than one garage door opener system, isolate each opener to see if one of them is causing the interference.  If you have more than one remote control, isolate each remote to see if one of them is causing interference.  The receiver in the door opener could also be failing, so you could replace it and hope it solves your problem.  You may have to install a new receiver and remote kit that uses a different frequency than your current receiver uses.

 I NEED AN OWNER'S MANUAL.

At this time, we do not have owner manuals available.

I NEED HELP TROUBLESHOOTING MY GARAGE DOOR OPENER PROBLEM!

(Please read before going to our ”contact us” form below)

OK, so nothing in the information we provided above answered your questions.  Now, in order for us to help you, you need to help us.

First, you should check the manual operation of your garage door.  Operate your garage door by hand and make sure it is running smooth and freely.  Your garage door opener will only work as well as your garage door.

Second, you should inspect all internal and external components of the garage door opener for obvious wear or damage. (Always unplug any electrical device before working on it)

Thirdly, when submitting your inquiry, it is important that we know the model number of the opener.  The model number is normally found on the back of the main power head, behind the front light bulb cover on the main power head, or on the side of the rail assembly near the main power head.

Last but not least, be specific with the symptoms that your having.  Inquiries like: “My garage door opener does not work”, is not enough for us to help.  Describe the symptoms that you are experiencing and we’ll do our best to help.

NOTE:  If your email address is submitted incorrectly, we will not be able to respond. So if you do not hear back from us, it is probably a result of an incorrect email address.
